Transportation Guides

Air Transportation

We have worked with all domestic airlines that fly into the greater NYC vicinity.  There are three large airports in the metropolitan New York City area.  Two are in the Borough of Queens, NY (LaGuardia and Kennedy), with one across the Hudson River in Newark, NJ.  There are also two smaller airports that serve the area: White Plains and Islip.

The great majority of NYC tourists arrive through LaGuardia and Newark Airports, as Kennedy has turned in to mostly an international terminal.  Also, some domestic airlines fly in to 4 of the 5 airports (e.g., Delta), while others offer cost savings if you fly into particular terminals.  From time to time, airlines run specials where the cost difference between any two airports can be well over $250.

We can provide you with up to date information on the alternatives you will have.

Of course, all the airports have good ground transportation into "The City".  While LaGuardia is the closest airport to midtown Manhattan, you may have other factors (arrival times, desire to visit other areas of New York, have lodging near friends or relatives, etc.) that might influence your decision.

Ground Transportation

There are several ways to get from the airport to your hotel and back again.  In making a good decision, factors usually involve price, convenience, and number of travelers.

The least expensive options are public transportation or shuttle service.  While price-saving options, they are also the most time consuming and complex.  From most airports, public transportation options require changing buses and/or trains; and once you make it to midtown Manhattan you still have to lug your luggage to your hotel.  Shuttle services are slightly more convenient (and about $13 to $25 per person depending on location); you need to make reservations 24 hours in advance if you want to be picked up at your hotel and taken to the airport.

The most typical choice is taxicab service.  As you will see in NYC, taxicabs are plentiful (except when it's raining or you are late for the theatre).  A car ride from the airport will cost approximately $30 to $50 plus tolls and tip (usually 15-20%) depending on airport.  Depending on your arrival time, lines for taxicabs can get incredible long and produce a wait.

Limousine service has become more popular for obvious reasons, and has brought down the cost.  This option will save time, produce convenience, and in some cases, saves money.  Your driver can meet you in the airport or at curbside; help you with your luggage while you bypass any lines.  For smaller parties, sedans are convenient, for larger groups, stretch limousines are best.  Our last survey of rates showed that sedan service from LaGuardia (the most popular choice)  averages between $82 to $125 depending on limousine company preferred and arrival details.
