Hotels
This is a collection of New York City hotels that we monitor on a regular basis. They are located very near the Broadway theatre district and other tourist interests. We've established relationships with mostly luxury properties but have included a few others to help some fit the NYC budget. We can comment other hotels upon your request.
Keep in mind some general considerations when selecting your New York City hotel. Like many European destinations, NYC hotels tend to be older and quite expensive, and the room accommodations tend to be smaller than the rest of the U.S. In fact, some discount hotels' rooms size resemble cruise ship cabins rather 4-star accommodations. When generating our listings, we always check for cleanliness, good amenities, and safety. We also check for recent renovation and possible future or ongoing renovation.
- Marriott Marquis Hotel
If you want convenience, convenience, and more convenience this is a very nice Marriott hotel in the heart of the theatre district…there's even a Broadway theatre in the hotel (great if you're scheduled to see "The Drowsy Chaperone"). The rooms are really quite large by NYC standards but the best thing is the location. It's less than a 10-minute walk to most Broadway attractions and restaurants. (TripAdvisor Rating = #37)
- W New York Times Square Hotel
How about designing a major NYC hotel in the middle of the bustle of the theatre district with the theme of tranquility and serenity? Well, they pulled it off here. From the moment you enter, you will feel more relaxed and amazed by the beauty and design of the common spaces here. With an ultra-modern vision, the W provides comfort and first rate service and amenities in the perfect location for theatre. The renovation is currently underway, so the current rating has recently dropped. (TripAdvisor Rating = #145)
- Casablanca Hotel
If you'd like to try a boutique hotel in the heart of the theatre district, here's your chance; this charmer, only 48 rooms, gives you great service and wonderful ambience. Yes, it's decorated like the film with great little details throughout; both functional and romantic, The Casablanca has a great wine/cheese reception each evening and daily breakfast buffet. This property is often rated #1 on tripadvisor.com which when you consider the competition is really quite a feat. (TripAdvisor Rating = #1)
- Paramount Hotel
This hotel set the standard several years ago with its new bold modern design and ultra sleek rooms. Today it's been copied many times (and perhaps topped) but The Paramount can be a good bargain when you consider its location and service. This would be a good choice for folks who weren't planning on spending much time in the room (as many of the rooms are quite compact), but prefer exploring NYC between shows. (TripAdvisor Rating = #235)
- Millenium Broadway Hotel
Just steps from Broadway itself, Millenium Broadway offers a four-star experience. The rooms are more spacious, and they've updated with new fabrics and colors. So if you want a hotel within 10 minutes of any theatre, most restaurants, and a place to relax between shows, this is a great choice. (TripAdvisor Rating = #87)
- Flatotel
Located slightly north of Times Square (where many of the theatres are located as well), this hotel's themes are derived from Frank Lloyd Wright's philosophy of hearth and warmth. The newly renovated rooms are earth-toned and large, and the entire hotel features first-rate amenities throughout. Some of the non-renovated rooms definitely need help soon. (TripAdvisor Rating = #203)
- The Mayfair New York Hotel
This moderately priced hotel is a favorite of theatregoers. Situated in the heart of the theatre district, this small European flavored hotel features a very friendly staff and nicely-sized rooms with small baths; nothing fancy here, just good basic accommodations with a great view of the Eugene O'Neill theatre next door. (TripAdvisor Rating = #197)
- Amsterdam Court Hotel
Slightly north of Times Square, the location is superb for most theatres. This lovely small hotel offers sleek design with well-thought-out room design. You are within walking distance of theatres, shopping, great restaurants, Central Park, Rockefeller Center and other sites. (TripAdvisor Rating = #224)
- The Belvedere Hotel
I can't imagine not liking The Belvedere. The rooms are larger than expected, the staff very friendly and helpful…and the location superb. This Art Deco property features all the creature comforts you'd expect from a luxury hotel, plus mini-fridges and microwaves in the room. (TripAdvisor Rating = #36)
- Royalton New York
The extremely stylish hotel, well-located for theatre-goers has just reopened after an extensive renovation (Oct. 2007). This time around they've gone plush and sophisticated with 9 ft. ceiling throughout the property, providing the overall feeling of a bigger space. The gray slate bathrooms are sleek and wonderful. We are sure that the new hotel will certainly rise quickly in everyone's rating. (TripAdvisor Rating = #140; old hotel).
- Sofitel
If you like your accommodations grand, with a French flair and all the trimmings of luxury; if you plan to relax and spend some time in the room, this is a great choice. About three-block walk will get you everywhere: the theatres, Times Square, restaurants, shopping, and some museums. Pricey, but always rated in the top 5 by tripadvisor.com. (TripAdvisor Rating = #3)
- The Michelangelo
Want to visit NYC, but stay in Italy, at the same time! Well, here's a fabulous luxury hotel that can accommodate your wish. A medium-sized hotel (178 rooms) in which most of the staff speaks some Italian, furnished with Italian art, providing some of the best amenities and service in NYC. The rooms are large and invite relaxation. Great location for all opportunities. (TripAdvisor Rating = #15)
- Renaissance Hotel Times Square
Sitting right in Times Square this luxury hotel provides excellent accommodations with stunning views of the hustle and bustle below. Thoughtfully, the buildings provided extra-soundproofing, so while close to everything, you can escape from time to time. Currently under another renovation (they do this every 5 years), we will update you when it's completed. (TripAdvisor Rating = #47)
- The Algonquin Hotel
Yes, the legendary writers from the past (Dorothy Parker, George S. Kaufman, Robert Benchley, Edna Ferber, and others) had their famous round table meetings here. Many renovations later, the property still has the charm and appeal from the early part of the 20th century. While you're staying there, find out who's playing in The Oak Room, one of the best small cabaret rooms in town. (TripAdvisor Rating = #111)
Hotel QT A small, chic hotel with lots of contemporary charm that is ultra European and stylish. While the rooms are a bit 'snug', they are efficiently designed and you've got lots of technology (flat screen TV, fantastic sound systems, complimentary wireless throughout), amenities (Egyptian cotton sheets and platform beds, free complimentary breakfast, indoor pool); "it's like staying in a mini-W Hotel." (TripAdvisor Rating = #59)
The Muse Is a wonderful boutique hotel with the perfect location. The rooms are larger than the majority of their competition and the amenities are also first–rate. This would be the first choice to stay, especially if you want to spend time in your room relaxing between events and meals. (TripAdvisor Rating = #71)
The Iroquois Hotel It's a little bit further to walk, but most would agree that it's worth it. While away from some of the chaos of Times Square, you get first-rate amenities and service. This is about the classiest place in town to stay; (yes, the doorman hands you an umbrella when it rains). (TripAdvisor Rating = #39)
The Shoreham This hotel has just finished its latest renovation, and is now a sleek, highly styled place to stay. While its rooms aren't the largest, they are visually pleasing with high-end bedding, artful mixtures of chrome, glass, and wood, and the common areas are all quite nice. While it's a bit further north than other properties, you're a bit closer to some great shopping. (TripAdvisor Rating = #150)
Doubletree Guest Suites Located right in the heart of Times Square, next to the famed Palace Theatre, this all-suite property is convenient and comfortable, not to mention the complimentary warm chocolate chips cookies available at check-in. Overall, most tourists love this hotel: it's always clean, safe, and while in the middle of everything, it's quiet up in the suite. (TripAdvisor Rating = #40)
Novotel Located just north of Times Square, this property is an excellent location for almost all Broadway theatres. Like the Marriott Marquis, you are provided with a clean, standard, nicely-sized room. Most rooms have views of Times Square or the river. For the first-time tourist who aren't interested in trendy, boutique or highly stylish but rather what they may be used to elsewhere, this is an excellent choice. (TripAdvisor Rating = #78)
The Bryant Park Located just across from Byant Park (clever huh?) this 129 room boutique hotel is wonderful...great rooms and amenities, services, bar and restaurant...and who's to say you won't see a celebrity or two? Away from the Times Square crowds and noise, but close to shopping, and all the Midtown fun. Yes, pricey, but if you want to splurge a bit without getting into the 'stuffy' category, this one fits the bill! (TripAdvisor Rating = #16)
Budget Selections By request, we have added two selections of budget hotels. They have been checked for safety, cleanliness, and service. They are lower priced (by NYC standards) but do provide the basic needs very well. These two hotels boast, that while they are lower priced and not 'ultra-hip' or fancy provide excellent value.
- Hampton Inn Times Square North
A 300-room Hampton Inn in a great Manhattan location that's rated on tripadvisor.com mostly in the 30's(that's impressive!). The rooms, amenities, and décor are average but the management makes up for that by being friendly and attentive. (TripAdvisor Rating = #33)
- Comfort Inn Midtown Hotel
This small (79 rooms) budget hotel consistently gets good ratings and comments on tripadvisor.com. The rooms are standardly-NYC small but clean. The have a complimentary continental breakfast, small exercise facility, and free wireless throughout. So if you want to save the bucks for other NYC adventures, this could be the choice. (TripAdvisor Rating = #69)
The Walking Selections We have included two additional hotels that are both first-rate and offer some extra creature comforts but are a bit further away from the theatre distict proper. If you would prefer to walk before and after the theatre or take a quick cab ride, these two gems are a great value, plus you get to be closer to shops and museums.
- Hotel Elysee
Located in one of the finest neighborhoods in Manhattan, this European-inspired boutique hotel is a gem. Only 100 rooms all with marble bathrooms, with fine friendly service and romantic ambience. Very close to 5th Ave. shopping and rated consistently in the Top 10 on tripadvisor.com. This is definitely the kind of place you can kick your shoes off between NYC explorations and relax.(TripAdvisor Rating = #7)
- Affinia 50 Suites
The standard rooms are a bit larger, the amenties are excellent, and when was the last time you stayed somewhere with a 'pillow menu'; that's right, you get to chose the type of pillow you want during your stay. Your visit will also include an extensive complimentary breakfast daily as well as a wine/cheese reception most evenings. (TripAdvisor Rating = #6)
